A night of Halloween fun at Marina Bay Sands (MBS) turned to real horror when three partygoers were badly injured by an attacker allegedly wielding a sword in its carpark last Sunday (Oct 27).

The three male victims sustained serious injuries including broken bones and deep cuts. One man’s ear was almost severed in the brutal pre-dawn slashing.

One of the three, who gave his name only as Eugene, told The Straits Times on Saturday that their group of eight had been heading home at around 6am after a Halloween-themed party at nightclub Marquee when they were accosted.

While in the basement carpark of the integrated resort, a man dressed in a doctor’s coat allegedly charged at him, said Eugene, 25.

“At first I thought it was one of those Halloween jump scare kind of things,” he said, describing the blade as resembling a short sword. The sword was swung so hard, Eugene sustained broken bones in both legs.

He showed ST gashes on his forehead, chin and ear, part of which had been left dangling and had to be stitched back together.

Eugene, a manager, said of his friend: “He was lying in a pool of blood, face turned purple… thankfully one of my friends is a nurse, and she managed to stem the bleeding.”

Another friend who was filming the incident on his phone was beaten by another attacker and sustained bruises and a sprain, he said.

The police confirmed the incident, saying it responded to an incident at 1 Bayfront Avenue at about 6.15am on Oct 27.

In the statement, police said three male victims, aged between 25 and 34, were conveyed conscious to Singapore General Hospital. Police subsequently identified and arrested three men, aged between 22 and 24, in connection with the case.

They were charged last Wednesday (Oct 30) for voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapon with common intention, which carries a sentence of up to seven years’ imprisonment as well as a possible fine and caning.

The trio are in remand and due to appear in court on Nov 6.

Eugene, who had screws inserted in his left leg to join the broken bones, was discharged from the hospital on Friday. Doctors say it will be at least a year before he will be able to walk again.

Eugene and Wei said that they were disappointed with how MBS handled the matter, both during the incident and in the days after.

A security guard arrived on scene only about 30 minutes after the incident, after being alerted by a friend of the victims who had gone looking for help, Eugene claimed.

While the police and ambulance arrived within 10 minutes of being called, there was a slight delay in locating them within the car park.

“If security knew this was happening under their noses, they would have been able to direct them to us,” he said.

Eugene added that he had contacted MBS on Thursday to ask what was being done about the incident and a customer service officer referred him to the police.

Replying to queries, an MBS spokesman said it was alerted to the incident at 6.20am on Oct 27 and responded immediately.

“We take a serious view of this case and are working closely with the Police in its ongoing investigations,” she said.

Here on a social visit pass, Steeven Raj Bernard Clement hatched a plan to steal from a prostitute to repay his debts.

The Malaysian, 29, responded to an online advertisement offering sexual services, had paid sex with a 30-year-old prostitute and robbed her at knifepoint.

He took more than $2,000 in various currencies and an iPhone worth about $1,400.

For committing robbery after 7pm and before 7am, Clement was, on Thursday, jailed for three years and three months and given 12 strokes of the cane. A charge for possessing dangerous weapons and an unrelated criminal intimidation charge were taken into consideration.

On June 9, Clement responded to an ad and was told to go to Min Wah Hotel in Geylang. At about 10pm, he went to a room there, gave $100 to the victim, a Chinese national and Special Pass holder, and had sex with her.

He armed himself with a 17cm-long blade which he had concealed. He grabbed her arm as she was leaving the bathroom and made her sit on the bed. He cut the room’s phone cord, turned to her and said “money, money”, Deputy Public Prosecutor Sunil Nair told District Judge Teo Guan Kee.

The victim took out all the cash she had in her wallet and placed it on the bed. Clement took the cash and her iPhone.

Before leaving at about 10.45pm, he placed his finger on his lips and went “shh, shh”. The victim called the police using a spare phone once he left.

Clement was arrested at 5.20am the next day at Park Hotel Farrer Park, where police found the stolen cash and phone, the knife and an improvised knuckle-duster.

Judge Teo highlighted that the robbery was planned, the weapon, and that the victim was in a vulnerable position, but noted she was not physically hurt.

Clement had asked for leniency and said an in-law had just died, his mother had cancer and his sister was pregnant.

We’ve all failed to hand in our homework at some point during our school days, but while not submitting your assignment comes with obvious consequences, a Malaysian boy hadn’t expected to be punished by having his ear stapled. The incident took place on Saturday (Sept 28) in a primary school in Sabah.

A teacher had stapled the left ear of the primary four student simply because he had failed to complete his homework, Sin Chew Daily reported.

The child’s ear bled as a result of the incident. His mother only learnt of the punishment after picking up her son from school that day. She filed a police report after.

Dr Misterine Radin, Sabah State Education Department director, confirmed on Sunday that they had received a report that a teacher had injured a student.

“We have received a report regarding a teacher who had injured a student’s ear with the excuse of educating using a stapler,” she told the media during the Special Education Teachers Professionalism Course closing ceremony.

Sabah State Education and Innovation Minister YB Datuk Dr Yusof B. Yacob remarked that the usage of a stapler to discipline children was unheard of. He said that as educators, teachers ought to understand a student’s problems and treat them the way they would treat a family member.

He added that inflicting punishment on students might affect their psychological development.

Meanwhile, Dr Radin reminded teachers that punishments can only be used for education, not for the purpose of injuring students.

While she wasn’t aware whether this was the first time such a case had happened in Sabah, Dr Radin related that the education department has received a similar case earlier this year.

“What is certain, this teacher will be sent for counselling.”

In 2010, a primary school teacher in Sarawak was reported to have meted out a similar punishment on a boy who was making too much noise during class. The traumatized child refused to attend school after the incident.
