Regardless of your feelings about the final season of Game of Thrones, there’s no denying the sadness that came with hearing the theme song for one last time during the show’s finale.
Eight years and eight seasons later, the hit HBO TV series aired its final episode on Sunday, 19 May.
While the now-iconic theme song has been covered countless times by musicians from all over the world, this might be the first time we’ve seen it played on traditional Malay musical instruments!
To commemorate the show’s final season and the upcoming Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Mahakarya Studios – a group of Malaysian musicians – recorded a medley of some of Game of Thrones composer Ramin Djawadi’s scores, including the Houses Stark and Greyjoy motifs as well as the main title theme.
In addition to using Western musical instruments like the flute, violin, and cello, Mahakarya Studios’ cover also features the gambus (Arabian stringed lute) as well as gendang (two-headed drum) and rebana (Malay tambourine) for percussion

Fans of HBO’s Game of Thrones are so riled up with the final season that they’ve begun taking matters into their own hands. Virtually, of course as is the norm in this day and age.
A petition has surfaced online, encouraging many fans of the series – irregardless of the houses they’ve sworn allegiance to – to come forth and force the American premium cable and satellite television network to remake their beloved series.
As of the time of writing, more than 200,000 signatures have been collected after one Dylan D. had launched the petition on change.org.
“David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have proven themselves to be woefully incompetent writers when they have no source material (i.e. the books) to fall back on. This series deserves a final season that makes sense. Subvert my expectations and make it happen, HBO!” the description of the petition reads.
With many fans feeling that this season was rushed, personally, the one that broke the camel’s back for many was the coffee cup incident.
With the final episode set to air on May 19, the petition is perhaps a little too late.
