GEORGE TOWN – The police arrested four men for allegedly participating in illegal gambling at a shed near Jalan Tan Sri Teh Ewe Lim, Jelutong early Tuesday (April 21) morning.

Penang CID chief Senior Asst Comm Datuk Zainol Samah said that one of the four was a disabled man and added that he and his friends were detained during a raid that was conducted by the state Anti-Vice, Gaming and Secret Societies Division (D7) unit from Penang police contingent headquarters at 12.30am.

“The suspects were gambling at the time of the raid and could not escape in time when the police stormed the shed, which was located near a car workshop,” he said.

SAC Zainol said the operation was conducted after several weeks of intelligence reports gathered by the police at the area.

He added that the location was hidden in bushes, and said that it is a famous spot for gamblers during the movement control order (MCO) period.

SAC Zainol said police seized several gambling items such as playing cards and cash during the operation.

“Police also seized snacks and beverages at the shed, which were believed to be prepared for the gamblers there.

He said the suspects are aged between 30 to 50 years old, and were brought to the George Town police headquarters and have been brought to court for remand.

The case is being investigated under Regulation 11 of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases (Measures Within the Infected Local Areas) Regulations 2020 and Section 7(2) of the Common House Gambling Act.
